If you’re new to Wordle and unsure about how to approach the game, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered!

What is Wordle?

Wordle is an engaging and deceptively simple daily word game that first surfaced in 2021. The core gameplay mechanics revolve around deducing a single five-letter word each day through the process of elimination. Importantly, the word of the day is the same for every player worldwide.

The game gained immense popularity in late 2021, especially after its creator, Josh Wardle, devised a way for players to share their results using an emoji-based grid. This feature encouraged social engagement, allowing players to show how they performed each day. The phenomenal success of Wordle led to the development of numerous clones across different categories and formats.

In early 2022, The New York Times acquired Wordle for an undisclosed amount. By 2024, players had collectively engaged with the game 5.3 billion times, underscoring its status as one of the best online games and puzzles for daily enjoyment.

How to Play Wordle

To get started with Wordle, all you need to do is enter any five-letter word. The game will provide feedback on how close you are to discovering the daily secret word. Correct letters in the right position are highlighted in green, while letters that are part of the word but in the wrong position turn yellow. Letters that are not included in the day’s word will be grayed out on the virtual keyboard.

You will have a total of six guesses to determine the word of the day; however, you can still use the grayed-out letters to help you narrow down your options. Keep in mind that the same letter can appear multiple times in the secret word, adding an extra level of complexity to the game.

Wordle is free to play on The New York Times’ website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets. The game resets at midnight local time, and if you log into a New York Times account, you can keep track of your stats, including your crucial win streak.

How to Play Wordle More Than Once a Day

For those with a New York Times subscription that grants full access to its games, there is no need to stop after just one round of Wordle. You can dive into an archive filled with over 1,400 previous Wordle games, enabling newcomers to catch up on what they may have missed.

Additionally, paid New York Times Games members have access to a fantastic feature called the Wordle Bot. This tool analyzes your performance in each day’s game, providing insights into how well you played.
