Should Democrats Continue with Harris? New Poll Reveals Unexpected Findings in Potential Trump Rematch

Poll Results Indicate Harris Leads in Hypothetical Rematch Against Trump

A recent poll suggests that if President Donald Trump were to face off against Former Vice President Kamala Harris in a rematch election, Harris would emerge victorious. The findings reflect an intriguing shift in voter sentiment since their last competition.

Strength in Numbers: Harris Outperforms Trump

The Strength in Numbers/Verasight poll has revealed that Harris would garner 40% of the vote in a potential rematch, while Trump would secure only 36%. A mere 1% of surveyed adults indicated they were undecided about their choice.

Interestingly, despite 40% of respondents favoring Harris, 43% stated they would opt not to participate in the election, indicating a notable level of apathy or discontent with the candidates.

Voter Preferences Without Non-Voters

When isolating those who intend to vote, Harris’s lead increases, capturing 47% of the voting pool while Trump receives 42%. This suggests that among engaged voters, Harris holds a more substantial advantage over the former president.

Public Perception of Trump’s Policies

The poll reflects a broader dissatisfaction with Trump’s overall performance, as highlighted in the summary of the survey findings. A significant 56% of respondents believe that Trump’s policy decisions have negatively impacted the economy, in contrast to only 22% who feel that his policies have improved economic conditions.

An additional 15% of those surveyed rated the impact of Trump’s policies as neutral, while 7% remained uncertain or did not express an opinion. These numbers signify an electorate grappling with mixed feelings about the current administration’s policies.

Democratic Party: A Narrow Trust Advantage

Despite these unfavorable ratings for Trump, the Democratic Party holds only a slim lead in voter trust regarding policy issues. In terms of job management and economic stewardship, 41% of adults expressed trust in the Democrats over Republicans, who received 39%. This tight margin underscores the ongoing competitiveness between the two parties.

On the issue of inflation, the Democrats again have a slight edge, with 38% of respondents trusting them more compared to 37% for the Republicans. However, Democrats demonstrate a more significant advantage in several key areas, including government funding and social programs, healthcare, and education.

Key Issues Favoring Democrats

In particular, 48% of survey participants place their trust in Democrats regarding government funding and social programs, while only 35% trust Republicans in this area. Additionally, on healthcare, Democrats are viewed favorably by 46% of respondents compared to 33% for Republicans. In education, the gap remains consistent with figures of 46% for Democrats and 35% for Republicans.

Republicans Retain Strength on Immigration Issues

Conversely, the Republicans maintain a distinct advantage concerning immigration matters. According to the poll, 46% of adults trust Republicans more on immigration, while only 33% lean towards Democrats. This indicates a firm partisan divide that remains relevant to many voters.

The Republicans also excel in perceptions of border security, with half of the adults surveyed (50%) preferring the GOP’s stance over Democrats’ at just 29%. Furthermore, on deportation policies, 45% of respondents trust Republicans compared to 34% for Democrats.

Foreign Policy: A Tied Front

In a surprising outcome, respondents have shown that both major parties are perceived equally regarding foreign policy, with both receiving 40% support. This tie suggests that voters may feel similarly ambivalent about the international strategies of both parties.

Outlook for the Upcoming Midterms

Looking ahead to the 2026 midterm elections, a majority of respondents, 47%, indicated they would lean towards voting for a Democratic candidate in their congressional district, while 41% expressed a preference for a Republican candidate. The remaining 12% were unsure about their choice.

Voter Sentiment on Party Trustworthiness

The overall sentiment among voters reflects a lack of trust in major parties concerning critical national issues. The summary of the poll underscores a trend where with control of Congress in play for the 2026 elections, voters are leaning towards Democrats, partially due to a sense of regret over their choices in the 2024 election.

However, it’s important to note that Republicans remain steadfast with a loyal base and are by no means out of the race. The dynamic landscape presents a challenging environment for both parties as they prepare for upcoming electoral battles.

Methodology of the Poll

The poll was conducted with a sample of 1,000 adults in the U.S. from May 1-6, 2025, bringing forth insights within a margin of error of 3.2%. This data provides a snapshot of public opinion during a time of significant political engagement and potential shifts.
