Panasonic Unveils the S1 II: The Ultimate Camera for Creators

Panasonic S1 II: A Return to the Creative Core

Following the recent release of the unique photography-focused S1R II, Panasonic is revisiting its roots as a creator-centric brand with the introduction of the S1 II. This new full-frame mirrorless camera is equipped with a 24-megapixel partially stacked sensor, similar to the Nikon Z6 III. With impressive capabilities, the S1 II is designed to capture high-quality 6K ProRes RAW video internally, while minimizing rolling shutter issues. Along with these advancements, Panasonic aims to position this camera as a more affordable option compared to its full-stacked sensor competitors.

Design and Build Quality

The S1 II retains the same body design as the S1R II but boasts a more compact and lightweight profile compared to the original S1. Despite its smaller size, the S1 II does not compromise on user experience, featuring a substantial grip and a comprehensive array of manual controls. Additionally, the camera is equipped with a versatile display that can both tilt and flip out, enhancing user accessibility. The high-resolution electronic viewfinder (5.76 million dots) combined with CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II card slots ensures that photographers have the tools they need to capture the perfect shot. Optional support for Panasonic’s 32-bit float audio further enhances the camera’s appeal to videographers.

Exceptional Burst Shooting and Autofocus Capabilities

Photographers using the S1 II can take advantage of impressive burst shooting speeds, achieving up to 70 frames per second in electronic shutter mode and 10 frames per second with the mechanical shutter. The camera also features a 1.5-second pre-burst capture mode, ideal for fast-paced photography. The S1 II allows for high-resolution 96MP shots without requiring a tripod, and it also supports live view composites, multiple exposure modes, and time-lapse animations. Its updated AI Phase Hybrid AF system ensures quick and accurate focusing, incorporating Eye/Face AF, AF tracking, and innovative detection modes for animals, vehicles, and even “urban sports” such as breakdancing.

Video-Centric Features

While the S1 II is equipped for photography, its specifications clearly indicate it’s designed primarily for videographers. The camera enables recording of ProRes and ProRes RAW videos at resolutions up to 5.8K, along with 3:2 “open-gate” video at 5,952 x 3,968 pixels and 4K shooting at 120 frames per second. The inclusion of V-Log/V-Gamut capture provides dual native ISO settings at 640/5000 and an impressive dynamic range of up to 15 stops. Additional features for videographers include anamorphic video modes and external RAW HDMI recording capabilities in either ProRes or Blackmagic formats, making this camera a versatile tool for creative professionals.

Stabilization and Image Quality Enhancement

To ensure smooth footage, Panasonic has enhanced the in-body stabilization system, achieving an impressive 8.0 stops through its Dual I.S.2 technology. The S1 II also includes a crop-less IBS mode first seen in the S1R II, allowing for wide-angle filming without a crop factor. When higher levels of stabilization are needed—especially during active shooting situations—electronic stabilization can be combined with optical smoothing for optimal results. This makes the S1 II an excellent choice for dynamic shooting scenarios, where every frame counts.

Comprehensive Video Monitoring Tools

The S1 II comes equipped with a range of video monitoring features tailored for filmmakers. Essential tools like false color and exposure review help users ensure perfect exposure and composition. Furthermore, the introduction of live streaming capabilities marks a significant advancement, allowing users to connect as a webcam via USB-UVC/UAC— a first for Panasonic cameras. The compatibility with the Lumix Flow app enables users to create storyboards and shot lists, streamlining the editing process for faster post-production workflows.

Creative Features and Integrated Applications

Additional capabilities for enhancing the creative process are included with the S1 II. Photographers can apply real-time LUTs and use the Lumix Lab app to access a range of designer film looks, which can be baked into video clips or added later during post-production. Panasonic is also set to introduce ARRI LogC3 support, allowing the S1 II to integrate seamlessly with ARRI digital cinema cameras. This guarantees compatibility in more professional settings, appealing to cinematographers who wish to expand their toolkit.

Pricing and Availability

The Panasonic S1 II is available for pre-order at a price point of $3,199 for the camera body alone, with shipping expected to commence on June 16th. While this pricing places it at a higher range compared to competitors like the Nikon Z6 III, which retails for around $2,497 and frequently goes on sale, Panasonic believes the S1 II offers a unique value proposition in terms of its advanced features and capabilities.

Alternative Options and Lens Innovations

For those seeking a more budget-friendly alternative, Panasonic has introduced the S1 IIE model. This option shares the body and features of the S1 II but does not include the stacked sensor or high-speed burst shooting capabilities. Alongside these camera models, Panasonic has rolled out an exciting new lens, the Lumix S 24-60mm f/2.8. This lens combines many of the features and range of the more expensive Lumix S 24-70mm f/2.8 but comes in a smaller, lighter package with a significantly lower price of $1,200. Early impressions of the S1 II are promising, showcasing its impressive performance and speed, setting the stage for an upcoming comprehensive review once final firmware is available.
