36-Year-Old Mom with Stage 4 Colon Cancer Faces Higher Colonoscopy Costs Due to Age Restrictions

Diagnosing Stage 4 Colon Cancer

Heather Candrilli, a 36-year-old from Staten Island, New York, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in May 2024. For years, she experienced bloating and abdominal pain, which she attributed to either her diet or the aftereffects of childbirth. This nearly led her to overlook the severity of her symptoms, which ultimately required a proper medical intervention sooner rather than later. Despite the signs pointing to a more serious condition, Heather continued to dismiss her discomfort until an ultrasound revealed a concerning issue with her liver, prompting further investigation.

Challenges with Preventive Care

One significant barrier Heather faced was the issue of preventive care coverage. Due to her age of under 45, her insurance did not initially cover a preventive colonoscopy. This obstacle not only increased out-of-pocket costs for Heather but also delayed her diagnosis at a critical time. The law in New Jersey mandates insurance coverage for preventive colorectal screenings only for individuals 45 and older, as per recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. This gap in coverage led Heather to navigate a frustrating path to diagnosis while trying to balance family obligations and personal health concerns.

Confronting a Grim Diagnosis

When Heather finally underwent the colonoscopy, doctors discovered a tumor in her colon that had already started to spread. The shocking announcement of a stage 4 diagnosis added immense pressure and urgency to Heather’s situation. As her husband Cory stated, “As soon as they ordered the colonoscopy, they saw the tumor right there on her colon.” This moment marked the beginning of a long and arduous journey of treatment and intervention.

Undergoing Treatment

Following the diagnosis, Heather began a rigorous treatment plan. This journey involved surgery to remove a portion of her colon, alongside an aggressive regimen of chemotherapy. To date, she has undergone 20 rounds of this treatment, which has successfully shrunk her lesions. Despite the physical and emotional toll that the chemotherapy placed on her, Cory shared that the treatments have been effective. “As terrible as it is, the treatments have been truly working,” he emphasized, noting that Heather’s doctors were encouraged by the results and continued to provide her with the necessary care.

Working Towards a Liver Transplant

Currently, Heather is collaborating with the transplant team at New York University Langone Health in hopes of securing a liver transplant. Her health condition has not only involved battling colon cancer but has also led to complications that necessitate a new organ. Cory, a disabled U.S. Army combat veteran, observes that despite her challenges, Heather maintains an inspiring and positive spirit, often serving as a caretaker despite her own struggles.

Community Support and Fundraising

During this challenging time, Heather’s family and community have rallied around her. A GoFundMe account set up by her aunt has raised over $127,000, with notable contributions including a substantial $10,000 donation from actor Colin Farrell. This financial support is crucial for Heather’s ongoing medical expenses, which continue to mount as she navigates her journey through cancer treatment and the search for a liver transplant.

Advocacy for Health Awareness

Heather is passionately advocating for greater awareness about health issues that often go unrecognized or dismissed, particularly amongst younger individuals. She shares her story to encourage others not to ignore symptoms like bloating and bleeding, urging them to advocate for their health. “Advocate for your body and don’t waste time,” she advises, expressing a particular interest in influencing policy by pushing to lower the age of covered preventive colonoscopies in New York from 45 to 35.

Maintaining Positivity Amidst Adversity

Throughout her battle with cancer, Heather has worked hard to maintain a positive outlook. Despite the challenges posed by her diagnosis and ongoing treatments, she remains hopeful about finding a suitable donor match for her liver transplant. Heather’s resilience and determination are evident in her words as she remains focused on recovery and well-being, expressing her eager anticipation of that perfect match. “I hope to find a match soon,” she asserts, demonstrating her unyielding spirit amidst adversity.

Conclusion

Heather’s journey is a powerful testament to the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare and the critical nature of timely medical intervention. Her story sheds light on the challenges facing individuals with early-onset diseases and the potentially life-saving benefits of preventive screenings. As she continues her fight against cancer and hopes for a brighter tomorrow through organ transplantation, Heather inspires many to not only seek proper medical care but to also advocate for necessary changes within the healthcare system. Her story is a reminder of the collective strength found in community support and the importance of addressing health issues with urgency and diligence.
