Pebble Innovator Introduces Two New Smartwatches Inspired by Pebble | TechCrunch

Introducing Two New Smartwatches: The Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2

It resembles a Pebble, operates like a Pebble, but it’s not to be called a Pebble. Eric Migicovsky, the visionary behind the original Pebble smartwatch, has recently launched two new smartwatches—named the Core 2 Duo and the Core Time 2. These devices embody the essence of the original Pebble while offering modern specifications suited for today’s users.

Both of these smartwatches can be preordered at a price of $149 for the Core 2 Duo and $225 for the Core Time 2. The price point positions them as affordable options amidst a growing array of smart devices on the market.

Return to Roots: The Pebble Legacy

For those unfamiliar with the history, Pebble was a trailblazer in the smartwatch arena, emerging from the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform in 2012. At a time when alternatives like the Apple Watch and various Android-based devices were absent, Pebble carved a niche and set a precedent for wearable technology.

With impressive sales of over 2 million units, Pebble ultimately faced challenges that led to its shutdown in 2016. Following its closure, rival company Fitbit acquired Pebble’s remaining assets, which later became part of Google’s extensive portfolio after Fitbit’s acquisition.

A Nostalgic Revival

Fast forward to 2024, and Migicovsky is rekindling the nostalgia of simpler technological times with a bold new vision: to reintroduce the charm and functionality of the original Pebble. He considers what a return to straightforward tech could mean for today’s consumers, crafting the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 as spiritual successors to the original line of devices.

Notably, Google has played an important role in this revival by open-sourcing PebbleOS, the operating system that powered the initial Pebble smartwatches. After acquiring Pebble’s assets through Fitbit, Google realized that the intellectual property linked to Pebble would not add significant value to their business, leading them to return this invaluable technology to the vibrant community of Pebble enthusiasts.

Core 2 Duo: A Modern Take on Pebble

The Core 2 Duo is essentially a contemporary rendition of the Pebble 2, designed to operate on the original Pebble software. This smartwatch features an always-on e-paper display, complemented by a handful of side buttons that enhance its user interface. While it may appear basic when compared to other advanced smartwatches of 2025, its simplicity is part of its charm. The e-paper screen offers a non-touch, black-and-white display that draws inspiration from the aesthetics of traditional digital watches.

This device utilizes Bluetooth technology to connect with your smartphone, allowing it to display notifications and access the internet. Users can also easily control their music libraries through the smartwatch, ensuring a seamless integration of daily tasks.

Battery Life and Customization

What continues to distinguish Pebble from other competitors, and what is still consistent with the new smartwatches, is the exceptional battery life. The company promises up to 30 days of usage on a single charge, an impressive feature that speaks to the utility and practicality of the device.

Additionally, the fun factor of the Core 2 Duo is bolstered by its hackable capabilities. Users can explore countless watch faces and easily create simple applications for the device, fostering creativity and user engagement.

Migicovsky describes this initiative as a labor of love, emphasizing that it’s not merely a startup endeavor aimed at selling millions of units. He acknowledges that there may be some imperfections in the products, including potential delays and incomplete features at launch. However, he confidently assures that the experience will be filled with joy and nostalgia. “Every time you look down at your watch, you will smile,” he expresses in a blog post announcing the launch.

Core Time 2: A Premium Option

The second smartwatch launched by Migicovsky’s venture is the Core Time 2. This model boasts many of the same specifications as the Core 2 Duo, but with a notable upgrade—a larger display featuring 64 colors housed in a sleek metal casing. Unlike the Core 2 Duo, the Core Time 2 incorporates a touchscreen interface, although current Pebble applications do not yet support touch interactions.

This model may appeal to those looking for a more premium aesthetic without straying far from the spirit of the original Pebble devices. The added color display and build quality represent a modern twist while still honoring the beloved characteristics of the previous iterations.

Launch and Expectations

According to Migicovsky, shipments for the Core 2 Duo are set to commence in July, allowing eager fans of the original smartwatch to finally get their hands on this latest version. Meanwhile, the Core Time 2 will take a bit longer to produce, with availability anticipated in December.

As we step into this new era of smartwatches led by Migicovsky, the excitement surrounding these devices serves as a reminder of the impact that the original Pebble had on the tech landscape. With their blend of nostalgia, simplicity, and functionality, the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 represent a refreshing return to form amidst an evolving electronics market.
